The Early Bird Gets the Worm–Become an Early Riser

Sep 10th, 2008

I think it’s safe to say everyone is not a morning person. I would almost bet that more than half of society dreads that morning wakeup call or alarm. Studies have shown that many people are more creative in the nocturnal hours, like bats. Bats sleep all day and fly around all night looking for food. Some of us, especially musicians, are like bats. We start to perk up around 5:00pm and can work all night until the break of dawn.

Recently, Best Buy did a study with their employees to see what could make them more productive. The company gave their employees laptops and allowed them to work half of their work week at home. Guess what. Productivity increased up to 40%! Some of their workers stated they preferred to work during the evening hours, and working at home allowed them to indulge this, ergo inreasing their work productivity.

However, many of us do not have the luxury of working at home on our own hours so the following are some tips to help you get an earlier start to your day, without dreading it.

  1. Look forward to a nice Green or Vegan breakfast. Rising a little earlier each morning gives you more time to indulge yourself in the kind of breakfast you would really like. Why not try my Zen Bars recipe with an herbal tea?
  2. A 30 minute earlier wakeup call may also mean less time in traffic. I usually arrive to my destinations 15-30 minutes earlier than is required, but this gives me more time to settle in and plan my work day better, before everyone else arrives at the office.
  3. The early bird also gets the better parking spot. I think this one i self explanatory.
  4. Practice a little Zen Yoga. Getting up 30-45 minutes earlier each morning allows you practive some morning Yoga or get your day started on the treadmill. I like to get my day started with a good run at Runyon Canyon a few mornings each week. The early exercise wakes you up and boosts your energy and matabolism for the rest of the day.
