The following are 5 Tips for successful bicycle commuting. Why? Let’s pretend that gas prices aren’t at an all time high…we are still destroying the planet with gas and exhaust fumes. Earth-friendly transportation includes car pooling, walking and bicycling. If you live ten miles or less from your job, you may want to seriously consier giving bicycle commuting a chance. Not only are you saving the planet, you will be getting daily exercise and enjoying all that nature has to give with your new scenic route.
Equipment
Not only should you be equipped with a good helmet, you may also want to consider traveling with a back pack that may contain deodorant, soap and an extra shirt. After all, if you are commuting to work, you still want to be fresh and presentable for the work day.
No Need to Be Fancy Schmancy
There’s no need to run out an buy and expensive mountain bike to commute to work. More often than not, less is best. If you have an old bike laying around in the garage, give it a shot and I’m sure you will find that it will more than suit your new biking commuting needs. Better yet, consider a recycled bicycle if you don’t own one already.
Know How to Change a Flat Tire
Flat tires always have a way of striking at inopportune times. The great part of bicycle commuting is tha you won’t need a lift in case of a flat tire. Keeping a good patch kit along with spare tube, air pump and proper tools will keep you riding in the asphalt jungle.
Be Safe
Although you are still hitting the concrete payment on a bike, you still have to follow the rules of the road as a cyclist. Cyclists have the obligation to make passing as easy as possible as long as passing is safe. If the lane is wide enough, stay far enough right to allow cars to pass. If not, then you must take the lane for your own safety. Beginners often “hug” the curb because they fear traffic. This greatly increases their risk.
